Senior postdoc positions in high-energy astrophysics at NWU X 2

Good day

Senior postdoc positions in high-energy astrophysics at NWU X 2

The Centre for Space Research at North-West University, Potchefstroom, South Africa, is seeking outstanding candidates for two senior postdoctoral fellowships in high-energy astrophysics. The appointments are initially for one year, renewable up to 5 years, depending on satisfactory performance. The salary will be ZAR 438 000 per year (which is significantly higher than a usual postdoc salary in South Africa and will be income-tax-free). A Ph.D. in astronomy / astrophysics or a closely related field is required, and prior postdoctoral experience is highly desirable.

The research activities of the two positions should focus on observational or theoretical high-energy and multi-messenger astrophysics. One postdoc will work with Prof. Markus Boettcher, with a focus on extragalactic multi-wavelength / multi-messenger astrophysics. The other postdoc will work with Prof. Christo Venter on modelling of broadband pulsar and pulsar wind nebula (PWN) emission, as well as observational / theoretical work on pulsars and fast radio bursts (FRBs).

The institutional expectations for these prize postdoctoral fellowships include:

– publication of at least 4 refereed journal papers per year;

– co-supervision of at least 1 M.Sc. or Ph.D. student per year;

– participation in grant proposal writing – at least one submission per year;

– a moderate amount of participation in administration.

Applicants are requested to send a CV, publication list, summary of past research, research plan, and contact information of at least 3 references, to Markus Boettcher (Markus.Bottcher@nwu.ac.za) and/or Christo Venter (Christo.Venter@nwu.ac.za) no later than September 30, 2022.

Kind regards,
