Congratulations to Mr. Conrad Strydom : SA’s Overall Matric Top Achiever & SAPhO2016 Gold Medallist

On behalf of the SAIP, I would like to congratulate the SAPhO 2016 (South African Physics Olympiad) Gold Award winner, Mr. Conrad Strydom from Hermanus High in the Western Cape on his tremendous effort to become South Africa’s top achiever in the Matric Class of 2016. Conrad from Onrus River on the Overberg Coast‚ was helped to the academic pinnacle by his results in maths and physics. He is going to study Physics at the University of Stellenbosch!

Physics is a fundamental basic science underpinning all Science, Engineering and Technology disciplines.  SAIP launched the South African Physics Olympiad, SAPhO, to encourage the study of physics by the broader South African learners community and hence increase SET manpower. SAPhO is already contributing to this as exemplified by SAPhO 2016 and SAPhO2015 winners.  For SAPhO 2015, our Gold and Silver Awards winners, achieved the following in their final matric results:

1.Mr. Logan Geldenhuys (Gold Award winner) from St John’s College in Johannesburg passed with 10 distinctions out of the 12 subjects Logan Geldenhuys took in his matric.

2.Mr. Hamandishe Mathivha (Silver Award winner) from Mbilwi Secondary School in Sibasa, Thohoyandou was named South Africa’s top maths and physical science matric pupil of 2015. Mathivha was also Limpopo’s second-best pupil for 2015.

SAIP would like to thank Mr. Case Rijsdijk for his vision dedication and the contribution he is making in unearthing talent by leading SAPhO project. His willingness to go to the extra mile to develop a pool of high school learners to with a background in physics so that they can proceed to further studies in various Science Engineering and Technology disciplines.

Wishing Mr. Conrad Strydom and the class of 2016 matriculants success in their future endeavors.

Prof. Azwinndini Muronga, President SAIP
