The First Black SA Physics Professor Prof JR Seretlo passes on

Genius has rested: Prof J R Seretlo
The first South African black physics professor, Prof Jacob Robert Seretlo passed away on Sunday at age 82. He received a PhD in Physics at UNISA under Prof P. T. Weldepoh, with a thesis entitled “Reaction amongst point defects in alkali halide crystals”. His PhD research earned him article in Physica Status Solidi (c) in 1968 and two single author publications in 1972 in Physica Status Solidi (a). Some of his research was done in his laboratory at the University of Fort Hare, where he started as a junior lecturer, the promoted to a full professor. . He served in the council of the South African Institute of Physics in 1991 with Prof Sellschop, Soker, Hellberg, Reitmann, Spoelstra and Hahne. Prof JB Malherbe remembers him, when he was a young man during the times of APARTEHEID, where Seretlo spoke at the SAIP conference annual general meeting. He was well-respected by his colleagues and fellow physicists.
He is an alma mater of the Rock, Orlando High School, Soweto
